A 29-year-old Concord man, Mario Sanchez-Mata, is under arrest on second-degree murder charges after he reportedly confessed to Rowan County Sheriff’s Office that he had killed his brother.

According to the Concord Police Department, on Aug. 3 at 12:38 p.m., officers went to 2754 Plantation Road NW, Concord, for a well-being check on 33-year-old Jose Sanchez-Mata after Mario told RCSO deputies that he had killed his brother.

At 12:40 p.m. Concord police received a second phone call from a woman at the Plantation Road residence saying her boyfriend was dead. When officers arrived, they found Jose had been shot to death.

Rowan County Sheriff’s Office deputies then took Mario Sanchez-Mata to Concord where he was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and discharging a weapon into an occupied property. Mario Sanchez-Mata is currently in the Cabarrus County jail under a $1 million bond.

Police do not believe this was a random act. Based on the investigation, the suspect and the victim are related and were engaged in a domestic dispute.
