COOLEEMEE — The RiverPark at Cooleemee Falls has been closed indefinitely after a 950,000-gallon wastewater leak upstream caused the waters to be deemed unsafe.

The park, also colloquially known as the “Bullhole,” announced the closure on its Facebook page, saying that the park was officially closed on Wednesday and until further notice.

Mocksville Town Manager Ken Gamble said that the town discovered that there had been an ongoing leak in the Bear Creek force main pipeline, in the pipeline to the Cooleemee wastewater plant, on Tuesday and notified the state. He said that town officials currently believe that the leak had been occurring over the past few days, and estimated that a total of 950,000 gallons were released due to the leak.

Most likely, the actual number of gallons released was smaller than that, said Gamble, but the town was choosing to over-report the number to the state to be safe.

“It’s always better to err on the side of caution,” said Gamble.

The town is working with the Davie County government as well as the Cooleemee Parks and Recreation Department to continually test the affected waters and help decide when the river is safe.

The leak poses no threat to drinking water in the area, said Gamble.
