SALISBURY — A former club on Webb Road caught fire early Thursday morning, and most of the structure was damaged or destroyed during the more than two-hour blaze.

People in passing cars on Webb Road first called in to report flames were coming out of the roof of the one-story structure at about 2:51 a.m. The first fire truck on scene confirmed it was a working fire, and as more firefighters and trucks were sent to the scene, trucks and crews from nearby towns were then called in to cover the city of Salisbury in case another emergency arose.

Most recently, the structure housed an adult entertainment club and pool room called 2nd Breath, but the business has been listed as closed since the first of the year. It was initially constructed as a private residence and several area residents said they thought the current owner had plans to restore it to a home. Officials said the building has been vacant for some time. No cause has yet been determined.

According to reports, there was a break-in at the facility last week as well, causing some property damage and equipment and property were stolen.

Firefighters from departments across the county responded to the scene with more than 25 trucks and dozens of firefighters working to contain the blaze that affected every side of the structure. Repeated calls to Duke Energy to make sure power lines were shut off frustrated officials as more than an hour into the fire, the power company was still not able to provide a response time, and it limited, in turn, where firefighters could safely be on one side of the building.

By 4:20 a.m., the fire was considered largely under control, with the acknowledgment that some hot spots along the roofline and inside would continue to flare, with firefighters ready to react.

No one was inside the building at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported.
