Rowan Public Library hosts teen movie watch party, discussion

ReImagine Science and the Global Co Lab Network are hosting a teen-focused event at the Rowan Public Library main branch, located at 201 W. Fisher St. Salisbury, on Saturday, from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

Teens age 13 to 19 are encouraged to attend this free screening of the documentary “Youth Voices on the UN Goals: Changing the World Together” followed by engaging discussion and activities.

The not-for-profit ReImagine Science focuses on the future of the planet, through transforming what it is to be a scientist. ReImagine Science’s Third Space events are designed to open up worlds of creative interaction and discovery, outside of our everyday places of home, work or school.

The screening will feature a 20 minute docudrama that takes viewers on a captivating journey, highlighting the stories of teenagers who are actively working towards creating positive change in their own communities and beyond.

After the watch party, attendees will have the chance to explore what is important to them, for their own lives and for their futures. Interactive practices, from the skillset of ReImagine Science’s prior work with communities, academics, teens, and the technology sector, comprise the final portion of this hands-on event.

Attendees will also learn about virtual hubs they can join. Those hubs are led by teens working alongside adult mentors, interns, advisors and partner organizations addressing climate change, mental health, hunger, gender equality, racial justice, wildlife conservation, quality education, plastic pollution and change through artistic expression.

For those interested in drawing or writing, the group will be creating a mural depicting issues particularly relevant and significant to today’s youth in the Salisbury/Rowan County area through visual and written media, in a fun, hands-on inquiry into hopes, dreams, and aspirations as well as challenges participants wish to share with one another.
