SALISBURY — Livingstone College’s Andrew Carnegie Library just announced the dedication of the prize-winning artwork “Strange Fruit,” donated by artist Donna Sabolovic.
The dedication will take place on Thursday at 11 a.m. The artwork was created as a homage to the song “Strange Fruit,” written and composed by Abel Meeropol and recorded by Billie Holiday in 1939. The lyrics were drawn from a poem by Meeropol published in 1937. The song protests the lynching of Black Americans with lyrics that compare the victims to the fruit of trees.
The library is also inviting the community to join in its upcoming events this month.
Please note the following events in September:
  • The Gerald Shrader Butler Collection, donated by Mr. Rex Butler, will be dedicated on Friday, Sept. 6, at 10 a.m. This collection will feature artifacts from Dr. Joseph Charles Price, the founder and first president of Livingstone College.
  • Dedication of the Dr. T. Anthony Spearman Book Collection, donated by Mrs. Janice Spearman, on Sept. 18 at 10 a.m.
