Non-working headlight leads to chase, arrest

A Rowan County Sheriff’s deputy tried to stop the driver of a silver Ford Fusion to tell the driver his front passenger headlight was out on Sept. 3, but the driver refused to pull over. According to reports, Terrell Donnelle Young, 36, pulled out of the Taco Bell parking lot on East Innes, and continued to drive so the deputy could not pull behind him. When the deputy finally activated his lights at Faith Road and Avalon, Young sped up, reaching speeds of 100 mph on Faith Road, before running the stop sign at Jake Alexander Boulevard. He slowed to about 88 mph in a 45 mph zone, crossing the yellow line and at times driving entirely on the wrong side of the road. Young turned onto Oakview then onto Oakleaf, which is a dead end. He then made a u-turn, heading back toward Faith Road, but took the turn too fast and drove the car down an embankment into stand of trees before jumping out of the car and running. The deputy was joined by other officers including from Salisbury police, and investigators located information in the car identifying Young as the driver. He was later arrested on a warrant and charged with felony flee to elude, operating a motor vehicle without a license and failure to report an accident. He was held on a $25,000 bond.
