If you know of a youth who is interested in becoming a young beekeeper, I highly recommend applying for the Youth Apprentice Program hosted by the Rowan County Beekeeper Association.

The Youth Apprentice Beekeeper Program is a fantastic opportunity for young enthusiasts aged 10-14 to dive into the world of beekeeping. This program is a over a 2-year commitment. This program is designed to ignite a passion for beekeeping and provide hands-on experience that will help the participants with the knowledge and skills needed to become proficient beekeepers.

Throughout the program, apprentices will participate in a variety of educational activities, including classes, meetings and workshops led by experienced Rowan County beekeepers. The program ensures that participants gain a deep understanding of beekeeping, both in theory and in practice.

One of the most exciting aspects of the Youth Apprentice Program is that each selected participant will receive their very own hive setup. This includes a hive installed at home or an approved location, essential beekeeping equipment, protective gear and honey bees. Additionally, participants will be granted membership in the Rowan County Beekeeper Association (RCBA), giving them access to a supportive community of local beekeepers and ongoing learning opportunities.

This program not only nurtures a love for beekeeping but also fosters responsibility, environmental stewardship and a connection to nature. It’s an incredible opportunity for any young person interested in bees and beekeeping to gain valuable life skills while contributing to the preservation of these vital pollinators.

For more information on how to apply for the Youth Apprentice Program, contact Shelby Carroll at Rowan County Cooperative Extension at 704-216-8970. Or visit rowan.ces.edu to find the application. All applications are due by Oct. 1.
