GRANITE QUARRY — Salisbury quarterback Hank Webb broke school records for passing yardage and touchdown passes, as the Hornets crushed East Rowan 57-0 on Friday.
Webb, a former receiver who was making his third start at quarterback, completed 17 of his 23 passes. He threw for 294 yards to shatter the single-game record (260) for the program that Griffin Myers set in 2017 against Central Davidson. Webb’s five TD passes set a new standard for Hornet QBs and were only one short of the county record held by West Rowan’s Noah Loeblein.
“Hank had another outstanding game and we made huge strides in our passing game and execution overall,” Salisbury head coach Clayton Trivett said.
Jay’lin Johnson had four catches for 118 yards and two touchdowns and added an 80-yard kickoff return TD on the second-half kickoff. Macari House, Evan Koontz and Jackson Sparger also had TD catches.
Salisbury (2-1) got rushing touchdowns from Hez Krider and Nemo Mason, as it bounced back from a Labor Day loss to Walkertown.
The Hornets blew it open early. Webb had three TD passes on the Hornets’ first three possessions. He added two PAT kicks and a 2-point conversion run for a 22-0 lead after a quarter.
It was 43-0 at halftime, which meant a running clock for the second half.
Salisbury’s defense held East (0-3) without a first down, as the Mustangs were shut out for the second week in a row.
East’s only positive offensive numbers at the end of the night were 3 passing yards and 5 rushing yards by QB Will Klingler.
“Defensively, we got back to playing sound,” Trivett said.
Trivett said linebacker Samario Collins was outstanding. He made six tackles in his first start.
Bryson Ware had a sack for the Mustangs. Sam Blackwelder was called on to punt seven times and posted a 37.4 yard average.
“Our seniors are going to fight to the end,” East head coach Brian Flynn said. “Kids, coaches, administrators, community, no one is going to lay down and quit. We all understand that it’s a process and we have to fix some things to get to where we want to be.”
Salisbury hosts Person this Friday. East can regroup during an open week.
