CONCORD — Concord’s defense held Carson to 101 yards on Friday and beat the Cougars 24-3 in a South Piedmont Conference game.
It was a tougher game for the Spiders than the final score sounds. Concord led 3-0 at the half in a defensive struggle.
When Julio Moctezuma kicked a field goal for Carson’s only points with eight minutes left to play, it was a 10-3 game, but Concord (4-2, 3-1) scored two late TDs to pull away.
“Our defense played well, very well,” Carson head coach Jonathan Lowe said.
Carson (2-4, 0-3) played without leading rusher Rosean Perkins and standout lineman Simeon Parker. If the Cougars had been able to suit up those two, their chances would have improved quite a bit.
The only points of the first half came on a Concord field goal, and the Spiders started that possession in the red zone.
But the Spiders took the second-half kickoff and scored quickly for a 10-0 lead.
After Moctezuma kicked his field goal, the Spiders hit a 68-yard touchdown pass with 6:15 left to make it 17-3.
Concord had 182 rushing yards to Carson’s 61.
Northwest Cabarrus is next for Carson, while Concord will take on South Rowan.
