LANDIS — The Landis Board of Aldermen approved a contract to remove and replace the boardwalk from the Lake Corriher Park Office to the Lake Corriher Fishing Pier during its meeting on Monday. The contract was awarded in the amount of $23,500.

“The current boardwalk that we have that goes from the park office down to Lake Landis is a little over 10 years old,” said Jessica St. Martin, the Landis parks and recreation director.

St. Martin indicated that the walkway has rotting and broken boards and handrails. Additionally, the pavers at the bottom of the walkway have begun to crumble and break.

The town received quotes from three different contractors: Brazawood LLC for the amount of $23,500; Ketchie Street Renovations for the amount of $27,550; and Carolina Construction Entities for the amount of $27,675.

St. Martin told the board that as she met with contractors, each of them told her that if they were considering longevity of the new boardwalk and “looking for something that is a little bit longer lasting (and) maintenance free,” composite decking boards would be the best route to take.

“The decking boards will keep moisture, rot, insects out,” St. Martin said.

“My recommendation goes to Brazawood,” St. Martin said. “That company was very thorough in identifying all the issues and offering other solutions as far as moisture barriers and stuff like that for the foundation and the posts … and their cost effectiveness.”

St. Martin said that they would also be able to get started within the next two weeks.

“We just had a few more boards break this past weekend so it is pretty imperative that we get on with that really soon,” St. Martin said.

In a memo to the board, St. Martin wrote, “Their quote is cost-efficient and goes above by including structural rectification, meaning all structural areas that come in direct contact with the ground will be wrapped in rubberized flashing, creating a protective barrier against moisture. This is another step towards keeping the posts and structural frame durable and long- lasting for many years to come.”

Mayor Pro Tem Ashley Stewart made a motion to accept the Brazawood bid for $23,500. Alderman Tony Corriher seconded the motion, which met unanimous favor from the board.
