LANDIS — High school teams as good as Jay M. Robinson don’t come along every day.

Not in 3A, anyway.

You’re not going to beat the Bulldogs, you can only hope to survive them so you can take care of the rest of your South Piedmont Conference schedule.

South Rowan achieved some modest goals in Friday’s 48-7 loss. The Raiders were going just as hard on the last play as the first one, that was the main thing, and South scored. Not many teams have done that against the Bulldogs, who have destroyed opponents by a combined 393 to 35.

“We fought,” South head coach Chris Walsh said. “We did a lot of good things against a very good team. Proud of the boys.”

Robinson (8-0, 6-0) racked up six sacks. QB Jon Bissonnette threw four more touchdown passes and had 315 passing yards. LJ Watson had two rushing TDs. Dominic Testa had 145 receiving yards and scored on the ground and on a reception.

Robinson led 35-0 at the break and achieved a running clock with a 42-0 lead in the third quarter.

South’s Brooks Overcash completed four passes. One of them was a 60-yard deep ball to Jadon Moore in the third quarter for the Raiders’ TD. That was the 29th career TD pass for Overcash, who tied Blake Houston’s school record.

Bryson Frieze carried 15 times for 39 hard-earned yards.

Trevon Sloan was credited with two tackles for loss.

Next for South will be East Rowan at home. The Raiders, who will finish the regular season with Carson, have a chance to make the state playoffs.

Robinson will play for the SPC championship next Friday against Northwest Cabarrus. The Trojans also are undefeated in league play, but they’ll be underdogs.
