MISENHEIMER — Girls from six conferences gathered for the 2A Midwest Regional at Pfeiffer University, so it was impressive that two Salisbury doubles teams played for the championship.

Salisbury’s No. 1 doubles team of Lucy Barr/Meredith Williams won the regional. The team of Lola Koontz/Addison Griffith was runner-up. Both SHS doubles teams move on to the individual state championships for 2A that will be held at Ting Park in Holly Springs on Oct. 25-26.

Carson’s Allie Martin reached the semifinals in the 3A Midwest Regional held at Concord’s Myers Park and qualified for the individual 3A state championships that will be held at Burlington Tennis Center on Oct. 25-26. Martin is having a comeback school year after a torn ACL. She competes at a high level in tennis, basketball and soccer.

Tennis has two-tiered championships for individuals and for teams.

The dual team tennis playoffs started on Monday.

Salisbury had a first-round bye and will play a home match in the second round on Wednesday.

In 3A, West Rowan and South Rowan were among the six South Piedmont Conference teams to qualify for the dual team playoffs. The 14th-seeded Falcons played at home Monday against No. 19 South Point. The Raiders are seeded 23rd and traveled to No. 10 West Charlotte.

HS FOOTBALL

Brooks Overcash’s 60-yard TD pass to Jadon Moore in the third quarter was the highlight for South Rowan in a 48-7 South Piedmont Conference loss to Robinson on Friday.

It was Overcash’s 29th career TD pass, tying a school record set by Blake Houston, but the Bulldogs were in control, 42-0, with a running clock, when the Raiders (3-5, 2-3) got on the board. Jon Bissonnette threw four TD passes for the undefeated Bulldogs. A story is online.

A.L. Brown suffered a surprisingly one-sided defeat at South Iredell on Friday in the Greater Metro Conference.

Tyler Johnson threw three TD passes for the Vikings, who had the game under control with a 31-3 lead at halftime. A.L. Brown (4-4, 2-3) got a field goal from Brian Rojo, a rushing TD from Jahazzi Cauthen and a TD pass from backup QB AJ Settles to Ke’shaun Kellam. A story is online.

HS GOLF

Golf regionals were held on Monday with the local 3A players at Cramer Mountain and the 1A/2A players at Colonial in Thomasville.

LOCAL GOLF

Wayne Rosa made a hole-in-one on No. 16 at Warrior. He used a 5-iron on the 163-yard hole.

Erwin Middle School golfer Cam Honeycutt shot 74-69 and finished second in the  12-14 age group in the 8th annual Western Carolina Junior Classic at the Country Club of Salisbury.

HS VOLLEYBALL

Carson (24-5) got the No. 5 seed for the 3A state playoffs. The Cougars, South Piedmont Conference regular season co-champs and tournament champs, host No. 28 Crest on Tuesday.

No. 15 East Rowan and No. 18 South Rowan will tangle in Granite Quarry in a first-round match on Tuesday. The Mustangs won both regular-season meetings.

West Rowan is No. 25 in the 3A West bracket and will travel to No. 8 Rockingham County, a conference champ.

Also traveling to play a conference champ in the 2A West playoffs is No. 26 Salisbury. The Hornets are at No. 7 Community School of Davidson.

HS CROSS COUNTRY

Regionals are set for Saturday, with South Piedmont Conference runners competing at Salisbury Community Park.

Salisbury runners are at Fisher River Park in Dobson.

A.L. Brown runners are in the 4A Midwest Regional in Kernersville.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

Junior linebacker Jalon Walker (Salisbury) had a huge game on Saturday when Georgia won at No. 1 Texas.

Walker had three sacks and a fumble recovery and elevated his draft stock. He looked to be the best player on a field loaded with future pros.

Zeek Biggers (West Rowan) had five tackles in Georgia Tech’s loss to Notre Dame.

Notre Dame kicker Mitch Jeter, from Salisbury, has been out with a hip injury.

Guilford’s AJ Merriman (Carson) had five catches for 56 yards in a loss to Washington & Lee.

Virginia Union’s Jabril Norman (Salisbury) blocked a kick, got a sack and had three tackles for loss in the 63-12 destruction of Lincoln on Saturday.

Catawba suffered another painful loss, as Newberry scored with under a minute left to beat the Indians 26-21 on a homecoming Saturday in Salisury.

Juice Martin had two interceptions, including a long pick-sox for Catawba and LJ Turner pounded out  another 200-yard rushing game, but Newberry held the Indians (2-5, 1-4) to their lowest offensive production of the season. A full story is online.

Winston-Salem State beat Livingtone 31-17 in Salisbury on Saturday to halt the Blue Bears’ three-game winning streak.

A tipped pass that became a pick-six for the Rams was the key play as it gave the Rams a two-TD lead.

DeAngelo Austin topped 200 passing yards for the Blue Bears (5-3, 3-2), but the Rams shut down Livingstone’s running game. JyMikaah Wells (Salisbury) rushed for 24 yards on nine carries. A full story is online.

COLLEGE CROSS COUNTRY

UCS Upstate’s Adalie Harrison (East Rowan) ran a PR 19:50 at The University of South Carolina Upstate Invite. The conference and regional meets will close out her cross country career .

She will earn her nursing degree in December, but she plans to compete in indoor track and outdoor track in 2025, as she works on a psychology minor.
