Salisbury PD to host annual Christmas bike giveaway

SALISBURY — For the 23rd year, the Salisbury police department will be giving new bikes to children this Christmas, in partnership with Cloninger Automotive Group.

The program began when Gerry and Brenda Wood, of the former Gerry Wood Auto Group, were inspired by their son, a Canadian police officer, to do something to benefit both their community and their police department. They decided to give new bicycles to the police department which would then distribute the bikes to children in need throughout the city.

In 2022, the Woods celebrated their last year with the bike giveaway, but the current owner of the business, Cloninger, has carried on the tradition.

“It is our desire to give bikes to those who couldn’t otherwise be able to receive this gift,” said Salisbury Police Chief Patrick “PJ” Smith.

To be eligible to receive a bicycle, children must be Salisbury residents, they must be between the ages of 5 and 14, and they must be present at the residence on the application the day of the delivery.

The number of bicycles to be given out is limited and preference will be given to children of families who are in the most need of assistance. Applications are for families who have never qualified for a bicycle from the program. Completing the form does not guarantee receiving a bicycle.
