High school girls tennis: Hornets fall in semifinals

HOLLY SPRINGS — Salisbury’s doubles team of Lucy Barr/Meredith Williams won two matches in the 2A State Championships before losing in the semifinals to the team from North Carolina School of Science Math-Durham.

The NCSSM team included a familiar face, Cora Wymbs, a former teammate of Barr and Williams. Wymbs, finished as state runner-up in doubles last season, playing as a Hornet with her older sister, Millie. Millie was a senior and is now at the Coast Guard Academy.

Cora Wymbs teamed this season at NCSSM with Isabella Hocker.

Wymbs and Hocker lost a 6-1, 6-1 match in the final to Research Triangle’s team of Victoria Zhou/Alexis Zhao.

Salisbury’s doubles team of Addie Griffth/Lola Koontz lost a close first-round match.

Carson’s Allie Martin lost her first-round match in the 3A State Championships in Burlington.

Salisbury is still alive in the 2A dual team state playoffs. Next for the eighth-seeded Hornets is a trip to No. 1 Hendersonville.
