CHINA GROVE — The driver who was killed in a single-car crash on Ebenezer Road along the stretch of the street that crosses into China Grove on Tuesday evening has been identified by N.C. State Highway Patrol.

Police say Jose Miguel Rosales Hernandez, 39, of Kannapolis died after the 2024 silver pickup truck he was driving ran off the road just beyond East 22nd Street where Ebenezer crosses a creek. According to accident reports, at about 5:41 p.m. Hernandez crossed the center line and ran off the left side of the road, striking a road sign and a bridge guard rail. The truck then jumped the creek, hit an embankment and flipped over.

Hernandez was not wearing a seatbelt, officials said, and speed was a factor in the crash.

One passenger was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Cabarrus for non-life-threatening injuries. Mt. Mitchell and Kannapolis fire departments along with Rowan Rescue responded to the accident which was investigated by highway patrol. Hernandez’s family was notified of his death.
