SALISBURY — A three-alarm fire damaged Isenberg Elementary School on Friday, taking over 40 minutes for firefighters to extinguish.
The dispatch for the fire went out at approximately 4:04 p.m., said Salisbury Fire Chief Bob Parnell, and crews from Station 4 were on scene by 4:05 p.m., and immediately noticed smoke showing from the building. The firefighters called in a working fire, which triggered a second alarm. Parnell said that all students and faculty who were on campus had safely exited the building by the time firefighters arrived.
Parnell also said that a roofing crew had been working in the area that a fire began and were attempting to put it out with fire extinguishers. He also noted that the school’s HVAC system was in the area, but that he was unsure how much or if it was damaged.
A third alarm was triggered to cover stations in Salisbury whose firefighters were committed to Isenberg. Crews were able to get the fire under control within 40 minutes.
Parnell said that the firefighting efforts were concentrated on the south side of the building, above the media center, but that there had been smoke extension throughout the building and fire extension in some adjacent areas.
No firefighters were injured in the incident, confirmed Parnell. Locke, Kannapolis, Miller’s Ferry and South Salisbury fire departments assisted in the efforts along with Rowan Rescue Squad and Rowan County EMS.
Michelle Shue, marketing and communications director for Rowan-Salisbury School System, said that the extent of the damage to the school remains unclear, but that most of it appears to have been contained to the media center and was caused by water. She said that school system officials will monitor the system and notify families through ConnectEd on Monday about any impact to scheduling on Tuesday or beyond. School is out on Monday for the Veterans’ Day Holiday.
