College volleyball roundup: Hester dominating for Troy; Rymers strong for Salem

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Troy’s Tori Hester (West Rowan) had a season-high 33 kills and 22 digs in Thursday’s 3-2 win at Southern Mississippi.

That was most kills by a Sun Belt player this season and is tied for eighth in Division I women’s volleyball this season. It’s Hester’s third career-match with 30 more kills and was just three shy of her personal best of 36  set against Southern Miss last season. It’s the second most by a Troy player in program history.

Hester extended her streak of double-digit kills to 45 matches, which continues to remain the longest known active streak in DI women’s volleyball.

Hester has broken the program record for kills.

Lenoir-Rhyne, coached by former South Rowan standout Nicole Barringer, won a four-set match at Catawba on Saturday.

The Bears are 22-4 and 11-3 in the South Atlantic Conference.

Riley Hill (East Rowan) had 21 digs, six assists and three aces for the Indians (4-19, 2-14). Kary Hales (Carson) had eight digs. Kelcie Love (West Rowan) had six kills.

Queens senior KK Dowling (West Rowan) has adapted to a defensive role this season. She’s been an important part of serve-receive for the Royals and has 73 digs.

RALEIGH — Salem is rolling in the USA South and finished a season sweep of Meredith on Wednesday by winning in Raleigh for the first time ever.

Salem is coached by Barry Rymer. His daughters, Anna and Leah, former South Rowan standouts, had a big part in Salem’s four-set win in Raleigh. Anna had 11 kills. Leah had 43 assists and 13 digs.

WINSTON-SALEM – Salem won two more matches (28-5, 17-3) on Saturday at home and has won 18 in a row.

Salem and Southern Virginia tied for the championship.

Anna had 11 kills in a win over Roanoke to close the regular season, while Leah had 41 assists and reached 1,000 for the season.
