College women’s basketball: Catawba loses opener

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. — Catawba’s women’s basketball season had a rough start on Saturday night.

Catawba shot 30 percent and made 34 turnovers in a 90-70 loss to 24th-ranked Columbus State.

Columbus State led by 12 at the half and dominated the third quarter to build a 72-45 lead.

Catawba made things a little closer in the fourth quarter.

Jada Porter scored 14 for the Indians. Nala Baker had 13, and Saniya Wilson scored 10.

Catawba played without Mary Spry (Carson), who is expected to be one of the leaders for this year’s team.

Freshman Bailee Goodlett (North Rowan) scored seven points in 10 minutes in her first college game. She was 2-for-2 on 3-pointers.

Columbus State had four in double figures, led by Letiya Reeves with 16.

The Indians will look to bounce back on Sunday.
