College women’s basketball: Livingstone loses a close one

BLUEFIELD, W. Va. — Morgan Kelson had 26 points and 12 rebounds on opening day, but Livingstone’s women’s basketball team still lost 75-72 to the Mansfield Mounties.
The exciting game was part of the CIAA/PSAC Challenge and was played in front of a sparse Saturday afternoon crowd at Bluefield State’s Ned Shott Gym.
Livingstone had great rebounding numbers, reasonable turnover numbers and a decent shooting percentage, but Mansfield had an edge at the 3-point line where it outscored the Blue Bears 21-6, and the Mounties did a better job at the foul line, cashing in 20 of 28 free throws.
Still, it went right down to the the final seconds when Kelson’s 3-point attempt to tie was blocked.
Thalia Carter and Bria Griffith scored 10 each for the Blue Bears.
The Pennsylvanians led 40-32 at the half. Livingstone’s 29-point third quarter put the Blue Bears ahead, but Mansfield made a flurry of free throws down the stretch.
Katie Sheeler led the Mounties with 19 points. Danae Ellzy had 18.
