English Speaking Union: Mark Twain – The Lincoln of our Literature

Published 12:00 am Sunday, November 10, 2024

He’s been called “the Lincoln of our Literature” for the transformative figure he carved as a storyteller. With his humor, wit, and deep intelligence, Mark Twain captured the energies of 19th century America and the contrasting values of the civilized East and wildly energetic West. He knew and experienced it all from piloting the Mississippi, to prospecting for silver in Nevada, to losing a fortune as an entrepreneur.

There is no better expert to reintroduce us to the achievement of this elemental American personality than Dr. David Nordloh. Nordloh is a retired Indiana University English professor emeritus and administrator with more than 100 published titles to his credit. He will share the brilliance of Twain’s writings and lectures that reveal a deep and universal sense of the human condition at its best and worst. We will come to understand how this unequaled genius of words knew how to utilize the richness of America’s vocabularies… especially how his powerful mastery of the English language made his novel “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” told entirely in dialect, such a monumental classic that has garnered both praise and controversy.

The event will take place at the Country Club of Salisbury with cocktails at 6:30 p.m., dinner at 7, and the program at 8. Cost is $50/pp for English Speaking Union members, $70/pp for non-members. Reservation cut-off is Monday, Nov. 18. For more information, contact ESU president Gerry Wood at gerry@oldyorkllc.com or 704-213-6008.
