SALISBURY— All aboard!

Pack your bags and get ready for a fun musical road trip as the Salisbury Symphony Orchestra performs “Postcards Across America,” the second concert in their orchestra series.

Daniel Wiley will serve as the conductor for the free community event, scheduled for Nov. 23 at 7:30 p.m.

The family-friendly concert will be held at Varick Auditorium on the Livingstone College campus, 701 W. Monroe St., Salisbury, and will feature the voices of a combined fifth-grade chorus and the Salisbury Symphony Youth Orchestra.

Sponsors for the concert are Fred and Alice Stanback, who are partnering with the symphony as season sponsors.

Those joining in this interactive adventure will get to enjoy a stop in the Appalachian Mountains and, as noted in a release, have the opportunity to “experience the haunting beauty of ‘Oh Shenandoah,’ a song that has echoed through these valleys for generations. Set against sweeping visuals, this folk melody will be brought to life, capturing the spirit of the mountains and the Shenandoah River.”

Concert-goers will be able to go from the mountains to the prairies where they can hear “Prairiesong,” a musical selection that “captures the endless skies and sweeping amber waves of grain, while celebrating the heartland’s boundless spirit,” the release said.

The journey moves into the heart of America’s great rivers with “Down By the Riverside.” This piece, known as a spiritual anthem, will be performed by the Salisbury Symphony Youth Orchestra and the fifth-grade combined chorus, and, as the release noted, “bring the great American rivers to life.”

Prepare to climb and help celebrate the Rocky Mountains as the symphony pays tribute to the Rockies with the piece “Rocky Mountain Majesty.” The release said this particular selection, “captures the awe-inspiring peaks and rugged beauty of this iconic range.”

A visit to the Wild West is also on the agenda as concert-goers can experience the energy of Aaron Copland’s “Hoedown,” which, as the release said, “captures the rugged landscapes and frontier spirit of the American West, full of vibrant rhythms and infectious enthusiasm.”
