College football: Wingate shuts down Carson-Newman in SAC title game

WINGATE — One of the nation’s top defenses was up to the task when it mattered most, holding No. 19 Carson-Newman University to a season-low 84 yards of offense in a 28-13 victory in Saturday’s South Atlantic Conference football championship game.

Playing at home, the Wingate Bulldogs won their seventh straight game, moving to 9-1 on the season while claiming the third SAC title in program history and first since 2017. The Eagles fell to 9-2.

Carson-Newman was held to 54 rushing yards and 30 passing yards. Carson-Newman had been averaging 295 rushing yards.

The MVP was Wingate kicker Caleb Bonesteel. He was 5-for-5 on field goals.

Corey Siemer and Noah Bell has TD runs for the Bulldogs.

The Division II playoff pairings will be announced on Sunday night.
