High school girls basketball: South plays much better in second half, but hole too deep

OLIN — Fir what it’s worth, South Rowan’s girls basketball team won the second half at North Iredell.

But South got off to such a terribly slow start that it couldn’t get back in the game. North Iredell settled for a 64-36 victory in Tuesday’s non-conference opener, but that didn’t really tell the story. It was 33-4 at the half.

Yes, 33-4.

Give the Raiders credit for not sneaking out of the locker room and getting on the bus at the half. They played had in the second half. Kynlee Dextraze scored 13 for the Raiders. She got seven of them from the foul line.

South got down 10-0 right away before Dextraze made two free throws.

It was 28-4 when Dextraze made a layup off an inbounds play for South’s first field goal with about two minutes left in the half.

South outscored North Iredell 17-7 in a stretch of the third quarter, but the home team still led comfortably,40-21.

Hannah Atwell made South’s only 3-pointer. Day Pharr had a three-point play.
