ROWAN COUNTY — A Charlotte-area woman facing a litany of charges was apprehended in Rowan County earlier this month.
According to a release from North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey’s office, Kisha Shawwanda Lane, 51, of 8033 Truelight Church Road, Mint Hill, was arrested in Rowan County on Nov. 19.
Lane is charged with forgery of an instrument, identity theft, larceny, obtaining property by false pretense, attempting to obtain property by false pretense, accessing computers illegally and exploiting the trust of the disabled or elderly. All seven counts are felonies.
According to special agents with the N.C. Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division, Lane assumed the identity of another person by forging a check to withdraw $4,000 from a Transamerica Insurance Annuity account.
Lane allegedly accessed the victim’s computer and account without her knowledge or authorization. She also attempted to withdraw an additional $2,400 from the same account without permission.
The incident occurred on Feb. 16, according to the arrest warrants.
“Identity theft is a serious and rampant crime,” Causey said. “Our agents are working to aggressively pursue and prosecute insurance fraud and insurance-related identity theft in North Carolina.”
