Man engages multiple departments in chase after stealing car

A Greensboro man who stole a car in Guilford County Saturday afternoon, Nov. 30, engaged police from numerous departments in pursuit as they tried to stop him as he traveled down I-85.

Sometime around 3 p.m., Dalton Grey Evans, 27, stole a vehicle in the Greensboro area, and Guilford County Sheriff’s Office deputies initiated pursuit. When Evans crossed into Lexington, the Lexington police took over, handing it off to Davidson County Sheriff’s Office as he drove out of the city. As Evans continued along I-85 South into Rowan County, East Spencer and Spencer police joined in the pursuit. At this point, Evans called 911 to report he was being pursued by police but they “weren’t real police.”

Evans then hit one of the patrol vehicles, trying to force it off the road. When Evans reached Julian Road, he went off the exit, across Julian and right back on I-85, and Rowan County Sheriff deputies joined the pursuit. Deputies tried to use stop sticks at exit 68, but Evans managed to go around them, getting off the highway and right back on again.

At exit 58, one of Rowan’s deputies executed what is called a pit maneuver, which involves causing a car to spin out and come to a stop. Evans was arrested and charged by Rowan County with two counts of both speeding and reckless driving, assault with a deadly weapon on a law enforcement officer or government official, possession of a stolen vehicle, failure to stop for siren, felony flee to elude, larceny of a motor vehicle, resist/obstruct/delay of an officer, and possession of a schedule I controlled substance.

In addition, he was charged with warrants from Lexington and Guilford County, and in all, he received a bond of $315,000.
