Be prepared for fire danger in central North Carolina until early Sunday morning
Published 2:54 pm Saturday, December 7, 2024
A weather alert was issued by the National Weather Service on Saturday at 2:49 p.m. for fire danger until Sunday at 4 a.m. The alert is for Caldwell Mountains, Greater Caldwell, Burke Mountains and Greater Burke as well as Alexander, Iredell, Davie, Catawba and Rowan counties.
“Breezy conditions and marginally low relative humidity are expected in lower elevations of Western North Carolina on Sunday. Land management agencies have identified dry fuels and recent wildfire activity. Even though winds may not be a significant factor in accelerating the spread of any fires on Sunday, in this situation the low relative humidity alone is sufficient to result in increased danger of wildfires. Please refer to your local burn permitting authorities on whether you can burn on Sunday. If you do burn, use extreme caution since fires can quickly get out of hand under these conditions,” according to the NWS.
