SALISBURY —  Sparked by Michael Dorsett’s near ace on their first hole of play, the team of Michael Dorsett, Keith Dorsett, Chace Jensen and Ryan Honeycutt shot a red-hot 25-under par and grooved to a four-shot victory in the annual Corbin Hills Sunday Afternoon Regulars Tournament held at Corbin Hills on Dec. 8.

The winners held back charges by the team of Jeff Holshouser, Alan Barefoot, Dave Ketner, Salvatore Alfieri and John Struzick (minus-21), the McIntyre boys (Steve, Duane, Robin and Braden), who were minus-20, and the team of Randy Bingham, Chip Comadoll, Gaines Beard and Kip Honeycutt (minus-18).

The popular tournament is held each December at Corbin Hills with proceeds going to The Salisbury Post Christmas Happiness Fund.

The tournament used a Texas Scramble format. Teams select their best tee shot of the group, and from that point each team member plays their own ball until it’s holed. Two team member scores are counted on the par-4 holes, with three scores counting on the par-3s and par-5s.

“We had near perfect weather and had some great golf, tournament committee member Stan Honeycutt said. “The champions were composed of four of Rowan County’s best, and they started out hot (Michael Dorsett’s near ace on No. 5) and kept the pedal to the metal.”

Others did their best to keep the pressure on, with Steve McIntyre holing a 50-footer on No. 3, Comadoll crushing prodigious tee shots, Holshouser flag-hunting on No. 13, Bingham chipping in twice, and Mike Doran’s pin-rattling natural birdie on No. 2.

“All proof that there’s quality golf played in Rowan County,” Honeycutt said. “Most importantly, we raised over $2,000 for the Christmas Happiness Fund, which Corbin Hills Golf Club matched—-so we were able to donate over $ 4,000 to the cause.”

Special thanks and recognition to prize donors: Lee VonCannon and R.H. Barringer Distributing, Chad Campbell and the Country Club of Salisbury, Bob Timm and Carolina Golf Mart, and Tim and Garrett Gardner and Corbin Hills.
