CONCORD — It was Shrine Bowl week, which meant Robinson star Brian Rowe was busy with football, making it an ideal time to take on the Bulldogs in basketball.
But Robinson still had enough to beat Carson on Friday. David Frazier, who made a huge 3-pointer and a number of clutch free throws, scored 19 points and led the balanced Bulldogs to a wild 91-88 overtime victory.
Carson (6-3, 3-2) made 13 3-pointers and went 28-for-39 at the free-throw line, but the Cougars couldn’t stop Robinson often enough. The long, athletic Bulldogs (7-2, 4-0) got a lot of point-blank buckets on transition sprints and stick-backs and went 21-for-30 on free throws.
Jacob Mills scored a career-high 32 points with six 3-pointers and had six rebounds for Carson. He became the third Cougar sophomore to produce a 30-point game this season.
Jonah Drye scored 16 with three 3-pointers and had eight assists. Corbin Hales also made three 3-pointers.
But foul trouble hurt the Cougars. Drew Neve fouled out with 10 points and six rebounds, while Jaxson Martin fouled out after scoring six. Drye and CP Perry had their court time limited by personals and finished the game with four each.
Perry scored 15, but Robinson did a great job against him. He made only two shots from the field. He was 10-for-15 at the foul line. He had eight rebounds and eight assists.
Carson started well and was on top 34-31 at halftime.
Robinson surged in the third quarter and had a 55-54 lead at the end of the quarter.
Carson had a 68-64 lead with 3:19 left, but Robinson scored five straight points to retake the lead.
Perry made two free throws for a 70-69 Carson lead with 2:05 left, but the Cougars fell behind again.
Carson was down 79-76 when Drye was fouled on a desperate 3-point attempt with 1.9 seconds left. He calmly made all three free throws, and Carson survived a makable, last-second attempt by Robinson, which got the ball all the way to the paint with a long inbounds pass.
The Bulldogs were solid from the three-throw line in the overtime session, built a five-point lead and held on.
Mills was awarded three free throws with less than a second left. He made two. He missed the third on purpose, but there was no miracle finish.
Mills went 8-for-9 on free throws. That was his only miss.
Noah Speller added 15 points for Robinson, while Da’Montre Harlee had 14.
It was the second straight OT road loss for Carson, although this one will hurt a lot more than the non-conference loss to Hickory Ridge.
Carson 15 19 20 25 9 — 88
Robinson 12 19 24 24 12 — 91
CARSON scoring — Mills 32, Drye 16, Perry 15, Neve 10, Hales 9, Martin 6.
