High school girls basketball: Hornets advance to championship game

SALISBURY — Salisbury’s girls basketball team beat Carson 48-29 in a Friday afternoon semifinal in the Dale’s Sporting Goods Sam Moir Christmas Classic.
Third-seeded Salisbury (6-3) held Carson to two points in the first quarter and to eight in the first half.
“We’re still working on our defense, but it’s getting better,” Salisbury coach Lakai Brice said.
Seventh-seeded Carson (2-8) played zone, but the Hornets were able to make some 3-pointers.
“They forced us to make outside shots and we did that,” Brice said. “Marianna (Zapata) and Gabbi (Fatovic) shot with a lot of confidence and they are getting more comfortable shooting.”
Fatovic made three 3-pointers and scored 19 points. Zapata made two 3-pointers.
Keiara Spruill helped out with nine points.
“We still have a lot of improving to do, but everyone is doing their best to play their new role,” Brice said. “Getting better every game and proud of how we’re playing.”
Julia Burleson led the Cougars with eight points. Allie Martin scored seven, and Emily Guiton and Emma Carpenter scored six each.

SALISBURY — Second-seeded Mount Pleasant edged sixth-seeded North Rowan 41-39 in Friday morning’s consolation game.
Krisstyle Stockton scored a season-high 15 for the Cavaliers (1-6.)
Dasia Elder scored 13 and had four assists and three blocks. Elder made two 3-pointers in the third quarter.
Allanah McArthur had a team-high seven rebounds.
Mount Pleasant (6-4) played two exciting game in the tournament, losing in overtime to Carson on Thursday.
