High school wrestling: Falcons 3rd, Raiders 7th in Gavin Sharpe Invitational

MOORESVILLE — West Rowan’s Kevin O’Brien and Dakota Athey and South Rowan’s Mateo Diaz won weight-class championships at the 4th annual Gavin Sharpe Invitational hosted by Mooresville High on Saturday.

Piedmont was the team champion in a 12-team field with 197 points. Next were Davie (191.5), West Rowan (170.5), Cape Fear (119.5), Lincolnton (105), Mooresville (93) and South Rowan (92.5).

Diaz stayed undefeated at 113. He pinned Piedmont’s Lucas Belk in the final.

O’Brien stayed undefeated at 144. He won a 7-2 decision over Davie’s Andrew Davis in the final.

Athey won at 215. He took a 7-2 decision against Lincolnton’s Matthew Buckley for the championship.

South’s Emilio Diaz (106), Peyton Hinson (120) and Garrison Raper (126) were runners-up.

West’s Bryson Wilhelm (113), Oliver Perry (120), Andrew Taylor (150) and Robert Coleman (190) placed third.

West’s Mason Truman (106) and Evan Paustian (157) were fourth-place finishers.
