Very tough game,” Salisbury coach Lakai Brice said. “We had them, but we let it go.”

CONCORD — Carson lost a thriller at Concord’s Rimer Gym in South Piedmont Conference action.

Kaylin Williams scored 18 points and made the big shots for the Spiders in a 54-52 victory.

Carson (2-11, 1-5) can’t play much better than it did during the first five minutes and jumped all over the Spiders, building a 14-2 lead.

But Concord (3-9, 3-3) finished the first quarter on a 9-0 run to get back into it. The Spiders got a layup, plus a foul. They missed the free throw, but got the offensive rebound and made a 3-pointer. Then Concord got two steals off the press and two quick buckets, and it was 14-11.

Carson recovered from that burst and led 28-22 at halftime.

But the third quarter was disastrous for the Cougars. With Allie Martin and Julia Burleson on the bench with foul trouble, Carson’s offense came to a halt. The Cougars were outscored 17-5 in the quarter to fall behind by six.

Carson trailed by nine at 42-33 early in the fourth quarter.

Burleson fouled out with about seven minutes left, but Martin led a furious comeback by the Cougars. She scored 11 of her 23 points in the fourth quarter, driving around and through Spiders to get to the rim. Martin got the Cougars even at 44-all with a little over five minutes left.

Carson inched ahead 50-49 on two Emma Carpenter free throws with 3:20 left before both teams hit a scoring drought that lasted more than two minutes.

Williams made a stick-back for the Spiders with 1:07 left for a 51-50 Concord lead. Then Concord stole the inbounds pass, and Martin got her fifth foul trying to get the ball back. Then Williams made a 3-pointer off an inbounds play for a 54-50 Concord lead.

With Carson down four, Rylee Hedrick got a bucket to cut the lead in half. In the final seconds, Carson nearly sent the game to overtime. Hedrick had the ball in the lane and passed to Carpenter. She got the shot up, but it wouldn’t fall.
