College men’s basketball: Bulldogs make a dozen 3s to beat Catawba

WINGATE — Catawba’s men’s basketball team lost at Wingate on Wednesday, mostly because of the 3-point line.

The Indians made only three from long range, while Wingate was hot, nailing a dozen in 22 attempts. If you don’t have a calculator handy, that’s a 36 to 9 advantage for the Bulldogs.

Wingate also had the edge on Catawba at the free-throw line, getting 14 more attempts and making 12 more.

Wingate beat the Indians 90-85. It was close because Catawba did a lot of things right, making only seven turnovers, shooting 48.5 percent overall and beating the Bulldogs in second-chance points.

Catawba (8-6, 6-5) had some nine-point leads in the first half and was still up 49-43 at the break, but couldn’t hold off the Bulldogs (6-6, 4-5), who were playing in front of a modest crowd of 227 in Cuddy Arena. Wingate shot 49 percent for the game.

Jordan Miller scored 22 for Wingate, while Corbin Pack had 16.

Kris Robinson led the Indians with  18 points. Nick Walker and Montraivis scored 14 each. Zion McDuffie had 11.
