EAST SPENCER — An evening fire Wednesday at 303 Weant Street had fire blowing out of the home’s front door and windows, according to East Spencer Fire Chief Shawn McBride.
Firefighters were called to the scene just before 6 p.m. Wednesday.
“Crews made an aggressive attack and were able to bring the fire under control relatively quickly,” he said, but the entire interior of the house and its contents were destroyed, he said. The Red Cross is assisting the two residents who sadly lost a cat in the fire.
No other injuries were reported, though one firefighter did have his mask partially knocked off. McBride said the man was able to step outside the house and adjust the mask without being harmed.
McBride said the fire marshal is calling the fire undetermined at this time.
“Our hearts and prayers go out to the family,” said McBride, “and we would like to thank the Salisbury, Spencer, Miller’s Ferry, Union, Granite Quarry Ellis and Churchland fire departments, the Rowan County Rescue Squad, Rowan County EMS, Rowan County Fire Marshal’s Office, the Red Cross and the East Spencer police department for providing mutual aid and assistance.”
According to a Red Cross spokesperson, the two residents need clothing and a place to stay as their current location is temporary and only available until Jan. 18.
