The gift that keeps on giving: Anonymous donor continues Livingstone philanthropy

SALISBURY — Livingstone College’s donation windfall continued last week with another contribution numbering in the millions.
President Anthony Davis Jr. announced on Jan. 2 that the anonymous donor pledged $3 million to the Salisbury-based historically black college (HBCU).
The announcement came as part of Livingstone College’s faculty-staff opening institute, which was held at the School of Hospitality and Culinary Arts on Jake Alexander Boulevard.
“What a way to kick off our spring semester with a gift from our anonymous donor,” Davis said after the announcement.
The $3 million will continue Davis and the college’s vision called “The Miracle on Monroe Street,” a reimagining of Livingstone’s campus and the surrounding area.
“I like to believe that best practices are best practices … and we have embraced those practices,” Davis said. “The main thing is that we have been a good steward over every single gift that our donor has provided. We have invested every dollar into rebuilding our crumbling infrastructure and if you come on campus you can see the dollars going to work.”
Davis pointed to the upgraded residence hall facilities as an example of the work that is being done. Renovations at Dancy and Harris halls began last school year and are expected to be completed in 2025.
“(With) Dancy and Harris we are going down to a core and shell,” Davis said. “We are rebuilding the entire infrastructure. We have gone through and removed all the hazardous materials, gutted it to the core and shell. Those will be completed in April for Harris and May for Dancy.”
Similar upgrades are planned for Aggrey Cafeteria and two additional residence halls, Tucker and Babcock, that will be next on the list.
“We will break ground on the new cafeteria somewhere around April right before the students leave for the summer,” Davis said.
As for Tucker and Babcock, Davis said it will take about a year to get them up and running.
“When it’s all said and done, all four residence halls will be totally remodeled,” Davis said.
Thanks to the anonymous donations collected over the past year, Livingstone College is not feeling the massive financial strain typically associated with such large capital projects.
“All of these things are happening from a debt-free position,” Davis said.
Turning his attention to what lay in store for Livingstone College in 2025, Davis smiled as he thought about what the latest donation means to the Miracle on Monroe Street and the whole of the Blue Bear student population.
