SALISBURY — Rowan-Salisbury Schools will have a remote eLearning day for students on Friday as the county prepares for a wintry-weather mix.
School system officials made the announcement on Thursday.
“After consulting local weather agencies, the arrival time continues to shift for the winter weather expected in Rowan County,” the school system said in a Facebook post. “RSS believes many of our roads could present a hazardous situation for our buses and student drivers who would be traveling home from school.”
On Thursday, schools reportedly sent out instructions for students to complete remote work while out of school on Friday.
As always, students have five days (Jan. 17) to submit remote eLearning assignments for attendance and grading credit.
In addition to making classes remote, all extracurricular activities for Friday and Saturday were canceled. Per the posting, RSS staff should follow instructions from direct supervisors concerning work for tomorrow.
“Thank you for your understanding as we prioritize the safety of students and staff,” the post concluded.
According to the National Weather Service’s forecast for Rowan County, the chance of precipitation on Friday is 80 percent with a high temperature near 32 degrees.
“New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible,” the forecast said.
Friday night is expected to bring freezing rain and sleet before 3 a.m., then snow and freezing rain with a low around 26. The chance of precipitation is 100 percent. New ice accumulation of less than a 0.1 of an inch is reportedly possible. New snow and sleet accumulation of 1 to 2 inches is also reportedly possible.
There is a 30 percent chance of snow before 7 a.m. on Saturday.
Catawba College shutters doors on Friday as well.
An email from the Salisbury-based college’s director of marketing and communications, Jodi Bailey, indicated that due to the potential for severe weather conditions, “Catawba College will operate on a remote working schedule (Friday) to ensure the safety of our campus community.”
Faculty and staff were instructed to plan to work their regularly scheduled hours remotely if possible.
“Essential employees will report to work unless otherwise directed by supervisors. Dining services will continue to operate as normally scheduled,” Bailey’s email said.
