NEW LONDON — Freshman Sammie Lowder made a free throw with 4.9 seconds left, and North Stanly rallied to beat North Rowan’s girls basketball team 36-35 in Thursday’s exciting non-conference game.
North Rowan (2-8) was quicker, piled up steals and appeared to have the game under control on several occasions, but the Cavaliers didn’t score for the last 4 minutes, 48 seconds, a drought that proved fatal. North Stanly (7-6) was able to close the game on a methodical 8-0 run and pulled out the victory.
Allie Morgan scored 14 for the Comets, while Lexie Brown scored 11. Brown made a 3-pointer from the right side with 23 seconds left to tie the game at 35-all.
North Rowan led 16-14 at halftime, as both teams struggled to find any sort of offensive flow.
The Cavaliers found their offense in the third quarter by getting the ball to Dasia Elder on the left wing. Elder had a terrific quarter, knocking down four 3-pointers in a flurry. She was so hot she pulled up almost from the volleyball line to launch another one and got fouled. She made two of the three free throws she was awarded for a 14-point quarter.
Elder propelled North Rowan to a 31-22 lead, the Cavs’ largest of the night, but the Comets got two late buckets to get back to 31-26 by the end of the quarter.
North got a straight-on 3-pointer from Krisstyle Stockton with 4:48 left in the game for a 35-28 lead, but when the Cavaliers went cold, the Comets made a slow comeback. At 2:15, they cut it to 35-30. They made it 35-32 with 1:35 left. Brown’s clutch 3-pointer tied it, and Lowder’s free throw decided it.
After a timeout, Lowder missed her second free throw, but it worked out great for North Stanly as the battle for the rebound basically took care of the last 4.9 seconds. North Rowan had no chance to get a shot off.
Stockton led North Rowan in steals with six. Oglesby-Peck led the rebounding with eight.
North Rowan 5 11 15 4 — 35
North Stanly 6 8 12 10 — 36
NORTH ROWAN scoring — Elder 16, Stockton 7, McArthur 6, Oglesby-Peck 4, Cowan 2.
