Staff report
SALISBURY — Livingstone’s men’s basketball team hadn’t visited Catawba’s Goodman Arena since Nov. 10, 2012.
The Blue Bears won that one, but they couldn’t repeat that success on Monday. The Indians took an 88-78 victory. Catawba has won 17 of 20 meetings in the series and 11 of 13 in Goodman Arena. Catawba beat the Blue Bears for the first time since 2009.
It was a well-played game with high shooting percentages and reasonable turnover totals. Catawba shot 54.2 percent from the field, while the Blue Bears shot 52.7 percent. Catawba made 15 turnovers, while Livingstone had 13.
Catawba was able to build a 13-point halftime cushion, largely by preventing Livingstone from getting an offensive rebound in the first half.
Livingstone got five ORs in the second half, but Catawba (9-6) had 11 offensive rebounds for the game and won the scrap on the backboards.
Catawba’s other advantage was at the 3-point line. Livingstone was 4-for-14 from long range, while Catawba was 7-for-17. Kris Robinson made five 3-pointers for the Indians.
Robinson led the Indians with 18 points. Ibra Athie had 16 points and 10 rebounds. Nick Walker scored 12, while Solomon Tucker had 10.
Livingstone’s Janal Cannady Jr. had a game-high 26 points on 9-for-15 shooting. Kingsley Ijeoma had 17 points and eight rebounds. Jamie Lewis scored 14.
Livingstone (8-8) has struggled some since a 6-0 start to the season.
Catawba will take a little momentum into Wednesday’s bus ride to Coker. Coker has been playing very well.
