Dozen fire departments converge on large garage fire

A fire in Rowan County on Monday afternoon heavily damaged a detached garage and required a response from a dozen fire departments.

The fire occurred in a detached residential garage in the 3600 block of Old Concord Road. A South Salisbury Fire Department official said that communications received a 911 call reporting the structure fire at approximately 2:42 p.m. on Monday, and the dispatch went out shortly after.

South Salisbury personnel were the first on the scene and found heavy smoke showing from the building along with fire showing from the rear of the garage, confirming a working fire. Smoke was also visible for over a mile.

All residents were able to leave the building before fire personnel arrived, said the official, and nobody was injured in the incident.

The fire was ruled under control at approximately 3:30 p.m. The South Salisbury official said that there was heavy damage to the entirety of the interior of the building and the rear of the building also suffered extensive damage.

The Rowan County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire.

South Salisbury personnel were assisted by the Salisbury, Bostian Heights, China Grove, Rockwell, Franklin Township, Faith, Granite Quarry, Rockwell City, Locke, Ellis and East Spencer fire departments along with the Rowan County Rescue Squad and Rowan County EMS.
