Sign-ups open for Kannapolis Police Citizens Academy

KANNAPOLIS — The Kannapolis Police Department is once again offering its annual citizens’ academy beginning March 13.

Anyone interested in learning more about the police department and its functions — this free class is for you.

Citizens will participate in classes covering most aspects of the department such as patrol operations, traffic enforcement, defensive driving, firearms, K-9 operations, special operations (SWAT), felony investigations, interaction with the courts and community service programs.

Classes will be from 6-9 p.m. on Thursdays, from March 13 to May 22. Sessions are taught by Kannapolis police officers in a fun and relaxed environment which allows residents to build relationships with city police officers and get a behind the scenes look at policing in Kannapolis. This academy is free with priority given to Kannapolis residents.

Last year’s program had 25 graduates, including Aaliyah Hunter, Andrew Josupait, Carol Lee, Connie Brennan, Dawn Hucks, Delecia Bradley-Francis, Diane Browder-Boswell, Gina Hagan, Jayne Williams, Judy Stirewalt, Kylie Bocanegra, Logan Sipe, Mark Swenson, Meaghan Elizabeth Wade, Rhakeem Vanderburg, Rhonda Jones, Ronald Flanders, Sandra Nichols, Shane Watkins, Stephanie Forman, Sylvia S. Gause, Tamara C Corriher, Theron Gerard Smoutherson, Tim Haley and Wayne Stirewalt.

Graduates receive certificates from the program and recognition by the city council.
