HARROGATE, Tenn. — Catawba’s women’s basketball team managed to grind out a 56-48 win at Lincoln Memorial on Saturday.
The Indians (10-7, 8-5) survived the long road trip, a terrible start and dismal 3-point shooting to beat the Railsplitters (7-9, 6-7) in front of 250 fans at Turner Arena.
Freshman Bailee Goodlett (North Rowan) had 11 points for the Indians in the South Atlantic Conference victory. Mary Spry (Carson) got a very late start to this season, but is getting back closer to her old self. She scored eight in 19 minutes off the bench.
Janiya Foskey had 11 points and seven rebounds for the Indians.
Catawba shot 37.5 percent and went 2-for-15 on 3-pointers, but the Indians made free throws (12-for-15) and forced turnovers. Catawba’s 30-18 edge in the turnover battle made the difference, as Lincoln Memorial hit six 3-pointers and had the rebounding edge.
Catawba trailed 14-6 after a shaky first quarter, but dominated the second quarter to take a 24-22 halftime lead.
It was 40-all heading to the fourth quarter, but the Indians finished strong. Nala Baker made the 3-pointer that put the Indians ahead to stay, and the Indians were 7-for-9 from the foul line in the quarter.
