The Los Angeles Lakers and Comerica Bank celebrated Salisbury native Shequeta L. Smith, the founder of Shero Comics, as the recipient of the Woman of Diversity Award during the Women’s Business Awards ceremony last week.
Smith was honored at center court during halftime of the Lakers vs. Miami Heat game at Crypto.com Arena.
“The Woman of Diversity Award recognizes women who exemplify leadership, innovation and dedication in serving their communities,” said a release highlighting the event. “It celebrates those who act as role models and breakthrough agents in multicultural cities like Los Angeles, sharing their journeys to inspire and guide future generations.
“Smith’s impactful work in the Los Angeles community has earned her widespread recognition. Through initiatives like her SheroCon comic convention, interactive Shero Talks comic book workshops designed to promote childhood literacy in local LAUSD schools and beyond, and her commitment to increasing representation for women and girls of color through comics and gaming with her company, Shero Comics, Smith has become a trailblazer for diversity in storytelling.“
Smith described the feeling as an honor.
“Being honored as the Woman of Diversity by the Los Angeles Lakers and Comerica Bank is incredibly meaningful, especially during a time when Black- and female-owned businesses face significant challenges due to lack of investment and support,” Smith said. “This recognition not only validates the mission of Shero Comics, but increased visibility like this helps us continue our work of breaking barriers and creating opportunities for the next generation.”
Smith’s recognition comes at a poignant time for her and her community. A resident of the San Fernando Valley, she faced potential evacuation as wildfires spread dangerously close to her home and her company’s headquarters. Thanks to the efforts of Los Angeles firefighters, including some present in a neighboring suite at the game, the Palisades fire was diverted, sparing her neighborhood from evacuation.
The award ceremony served as a moment of celebration and gratitude amid the challenges posed by the wildfires. Smith expressed her deep appreciation for the firefighters and first responders who have tirelessly worked to protect local communities.
Shero Comics, founded by Smith, is dedicated to spotlighting diverse voices through comic books, games, and workshops that inspire and educate. Her annual SheroCon event and youth-focused workshops continue to make a lasting impact, empowering the next generation of storytellers and leaders.
