CHINA GROVE — Jacob Mills and Drew Neve made five 3-pointers each and Carson survived 60-57 against a West Rowan team that has gotten a lot better in the last two weeks.

“We were able to sneak it out,” Carson head coach Brian Perry said, after the Cougars staged a fourth-quarter comeback. Evan Kennedy killed us, and West played very well. We’re thankful to win. We were fortunate to get this one.”

Carson (12-6, 7-3) had smashed West 70-47 in Mount Ulla early in the season, but this time it was 18-all after a quarter.

Carson’s CP Perry had a sore back and hip but was able to play after taking a bad fall on a drive at Central Cabarrus on Thursday. He was injured again. He suffered a gash on the back of his head near the end of the first quarter. It took some time to stop the bleeding and he missed a big chunk of the game. He scored eight of his 12 points in the first quarter.

“He’s taken a beating the last few days,” Coach Perry said.

Mills made three 3-pointers in the second quarter of the South Piedmont Conference game to help the Cougars take a 34-32 halftime lead.

Kennedy got hot in the third quarter. That’s when he scored 11 of his 21 points, and the Falcons (5-10, 3-7) outplayed the Cougars for a long stretch. Neve made three 3s in the quarter to keep Carson close. West took a 52-46 lead to the final quarter, but couldn’t hold it.

West scored only five points in the final quarter, while Carson got 3s from Perry, Neve and Mills.

Neve scored 19 points, while Mills had 17. Jonah Drye had two of Carson’s 13 3-pointers and scored eight.

Jalen Moten had 12 points for West and made two 3-pointers. Josiah Young had 11.
