The Rowan Public Library (RPL) is well-known for its children’s summer reading program for youth, but did you know that it provides services to youth throughout the year? Regular weekly programs for babies through seniors in high school resume this coming week.

The first offering, Art Fusion for Kids, will be held Tuesday, Jan. 28, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the children’s room at RPL Headquarters (Salisbury). This event, designed for children in first through fifth grades, introduces multiple art forms and focuses on creating wearable art. Children can design and construct their own paper garment. They might add flair to an old T-shirt or create a fashionable hat or apron. The library will provide markers, paint, glue, recyclables and instruction, and the children will do the rest.

Along the way, the library staff will introduce children to renowned artists, from designers to composers, and show them where to find skill-building books about their favorite artists and art forms. If your children do not have a favorite artist, this might be the perfect opportunity for them to embrace one. Feeling a sense of ownership fosters curiosity and independence, qualities our staff hold near and dear. Like many of our programs for youth, Art Fusion includes hands-on experiential learning, problem-solving, and dialogue and reflection on their snazzy do-it-yourself creations.

Caregivers and their children are also able to check out a learning experience the same way they check out a book. Melissa Gephart, RPL Children’s Librarian, has worked on this project to offer new board games focused on early elementary skill-building. The games are a part of the Library of Things collection at RPL, and families may check out board games to play together at home.
