A weather alert was issued by the National Weather Service on Tuesday at 3:40 p.m. for fire danger until Wednesday at 6 a.m. The alert is for Northern Jackson, Southern Jackson, Caldwell Mountains, Greater Caldwell, Burke Mountains, Greater Burke, McDowell Mountains, Eastern McDowell, Rutherford Mountains, Greater Rutherford, Polk Mountains and Eastern Polk as well as Alexander, Iredell, Davie, Haywood, Buncombe, Catawba, Rowan, Transylvania, Henderson, Cleveland, Lincoln, Gaston, Mecklenburg, Cabarrus and Union counties.
“The combination of wind gusts in the 25 to 35 mph range, relative humidity values in the 20 to 30 percent, and dry fuel moisture levels will lead to increased fire danger on Wednesday. These conditions will develop over the North Carolina foothills and Piedmont and much of the mountains. Conditions should improve by evening as winds begin to taper off and relative humidity values begin to recover. Please refer to your local burn permitting authorities on whether you can burn today. If you do burn, use extreme caution since fires can quickly get out of hand under these conditions,” says the NWS.
