Robertson honored
Julian H. Robertson Jr., a leading investor, environmentalist and philanthropist, was honored by Denison University in April with the establishment of an endowed professorship in his name.
The $2.5 million professorship was funded through a collaboration of Robertson’s Denison friends, as well as his professional colleagues in the financial world, to honor his guidance and careful stewardship of a significant portion of Denison University’s endowment for many years and his close ties to the college.
The professorship, the holder to be named at a later date, recognizes exemplary achievement in teaching and scholarship by Denison faculty.
Roberts attends meet
Dr. Albert E. “Robin” Roberts, a Catawba College professor of psychology, recently attended the 13th meeting of the European Society of Neurosonology and Cerebral Hemodynamics in Genoa, Italy.
This meeting attracted participants from 44 countries and focused on the new developments in using clinical ultrasound as a neuroimaging tool to assess progressive cerebrovascular impairments which can lead to a set of problems such as stroke, dementia, and general cognitive dysfunctions. The very recent applications in the use of ultrasound as a treatment technique to prevent stroke also were covered.
Mathematics award
Heather Trexler, a student at Erwin Middle School, has been recognized by the U.S. Achievement Academy as a student of excellence in mathematics.
Daughter of Ty and Lisa Trexler of Richfield, she was nominated for the honor by Brenda Sloop, an Erwin teacher.
Spanish recognition
Several world language students from Salisbury Academy have attained national recognition for excellent performance on the 2008 National Spanish Examinations.
Eighth-grade student Taylor Capito obtained the bronze medal.
Honorable mentions went to seventh-graders Brock Overcash, Nathan Wyatt, Allie Billings, Benton Kribbs, Sally Fowler, Ryan Anderson and Tyler Petty and eighth-graders Kaylin Hunter, Joy Loeblein, David Coggin, Jenny Patel, Hannah Coulter and Alex Nianouris.
Yasmin Lozano Harris is Salisbury Academy’s Spanish teacher.
The National Spanish Examinations are administered each year in grades 6-12 and are sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese.
Ebenezer awards
Ebenezer Lutheran Church has awarded its 2008 Ebenezer Lutheran Church Endowment Fund Scholarships to 13 local students.
Awards range from $330-$1,000.
Recipients include church members Brit Helms, Ryker Helms and Laura Young. Other recipients are Derek Davis, Ashley Freeze, Nicholas Haigler, Carrie Hoffner, Keith Hunter, Todd Hunter, Amanda McPherson, Thomas Mabry II, Clayton Stirewalt and Matthew Wright.
