2 schools in program
Hanford Dole and North Rowan Elementary Schools are among the 25 elementary schools across the state that will have access to fresh fruits and vegetables throughout their school day thanks to a $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
This is the fifth year North Carolina public schools have participated in the USDA’s Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program.

National Guard awards
Cory M. Kluttz and Crystal M. Kluttz, both of China Grove, have been awarded $950 scholarships by the N.C. National Guard Association Educational Foundation.
Cory Kluttz, who plans to attend Catawba College, was awarded the Walter R. Freeze Scholarship.
Crystal Kluttz, who plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, received the Leadership/Citizenship Award.
Wingate marshal
Meghan Galloway has been chosen as a graduation marshal at Wingate University.
The honor is given to the top students in the junior class based on outstanding academic achievement.
A consistent president’s list student, Galloway is a member of Phi Eta Sigma, a sophomore honor society. She has been accepted into the 2012 class of Wingate Pharmacy School and is currently studying music and authors in Argentina.
Daughter of Karen and Edward Galloway of China Grove, she is a 2006 graduate of South Rowan High School.
RCCC recognition
Rowan-Cabarrus Community College has recognized four students for their contributions to student life through campus organizations.
Ira Henschel received the 2008 Golden Leadership Award; Jonathan Furnas, the 2008 Silver Leadership Award; Steve Carter, the 2008 Community Service Award; and Brenda Smith, the 2008 Eddie H. Myers Outstanding Student Leadership Award.
The college also recognized charter members of the Sigma Alpha Pi National Society of Leadership and Success.

Jefferson Scholar
Martha Pemberton Heath has been named a Jefferson Scholar at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.
Heath is a senior at St. Andrew’s School in Middletown, Dela., and the granddaughter of Lallah B. Heath of Salisbury.
At St. Andrew’s, she is student body co-president, captain of the soccer and basketball teams and recipient of the Robert T. Jordan and Robert H. Stegeman awards for exceptional contributions.
Superior ratings
The Women’s Choir and the Men’s Chorus of the Erwin Middle School Honors Chorus received superior ratings during the recent West No. 1 Choral Festival at Wingate University.
The festival was sponsored by the North Carolina Music Educators’ Association.
The Men’s Chorus also earned a superior rating in sightsinging, while the Women’s Choir earned an excellent rating.
Eleven eighth-grade Honors Chorus students from Erwin participated in the Rowan County Honors Chorus at Carson High School on April 11. They are Emily Clement, Melisa Hollar, Holly Staunton, Patience Burleyson, Tasha Gaines, Allie Henrickson, Ivey Stirewalt, Kyler Brown, Cole Hamilton, John Jones and Jake Ward.
Five Honors Chorus students were selected to participate in the North Carolina All-State Choral Festival in Greensboro May 16-17. They are Tasha Gaines, Lindsey Purser, Holly Staunton, Kyler Brown and Jake Ward.
The Honors Chorus will travel to Carowinds to sing at the Music Festival there later this month. The group’s spring concert will be at 7 p.m. June 9 in the school gym.

Knott fund set up
The Catawba College Board of Trustees has established the Robert E. Knott Endowed Faculty Development Fund to honor Dr. Robert E. Knott, who is retiring May 31 after six years as Catawba’s 20th president.
Information about the new fund, which will support faculty and curriculum development at the college, was presented to Knott at the board’s annual Trustees retreat in Blowing Rock.
Board of Trustees Chairman Tom Smith told Knott the fund will help assure that the focus Knott placed on academics at Catawba College during his tenure as president will remain in place.
This fund, to be administered by the Office of the Provost, will specifically support faculty activities such as workshops or colloquia devoted to curriculum design, assessment of learning, intellectual development of students and faculty, collaborative learning, innovative course designs, integration of technology in teaching and teaching and learning styles.
Kirby inducted
Hannah Miller Kirby of Salisbury has been recognized as a member of Sigma Alpha Lambda, a national leadership and honors organization at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
The organization is dedicated to promoting and rewarding academic achievement and providing opportunities for community service, personal development and lifelong professional fulfillment.
Mars Hill dean’s list
Four area students have been named to the spring semester dean’s list at Mars Hill College.
They are Kristen Newton, Cleveland; Lucas Bruff and Joyce Hucks, Lexington; and Ashley Alfis, Mooresville.
North awards programNorth Rowan High School will hold its annual Senior Awards Assembly at 9 a.m. Wednesday in the school auditorium.
