Jabe Fisher’s Eagle Scout project is no small one.
He’s planning an oyster roast Saturday from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Salisbury Station, 215 Deplot St.
Fisher, 15, is a student at East Rowan and a member of Troop 379, sponsored by the Granite Quarry Civitans. Frank Merrell is Scoutmaster.
His parents, Lynda and Eli Fisher, have been helping him get it all organized, as well as his grandfather, Jake Fisher, who will help with the cooking.
The roast will benefit the Fallen Firemen Fund in memory of Justin Monroe and Victor Isler, who died in the March fire at Salisbury Millwork.
Jabe Fisher presented his idea to the Scout council for approval, then went to Salisbury Fire Chief Bob Parnell with the idea. Parnell approved, too, and firefighters from all over the county will help at the roast. Jabe made his presentation at a meeting where Isler’s and Monroe’s families were present, and they also liked the plan.
It all started when Jabe went with his mother to bring pizzas to the main fire station on East Innes Street after the fire. He likes helping out.
Other Eagle Scouts and Scouts from other troops will help, too. Already, they have received food donations and donations to cover the cost of using Salisbury Station.
The menu consists of oysters, steamed and broiled shrimp, fried flounder, clam chowder and all the trimmings. All the proceeds will go to the fund.
Tickets are $25 and are available at Unique Pizza in Granite Quarry, and the Granite Quarry, Locke, Rockwell, Spencer fire departments and at the main fire station. Someone should be at those departments at all times.
The Fishers encourage people to buy tickets early so they can purchase the right amount of food. They hope to have at least 500 people at the roast and would like to see 800.
No take-out or delivery will be available.
