A long-standing tradition continues Monday with a Memorial Day Remembrance Service at Salisbury National Cemetery Annex.
The event kicks off at 10 a.m.
Don Webb, president of the Rowan County Veterans Council, said the service dates “to the 1940s, at least.”
He said the Veterans Council helps sponsor two annual services ó at Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day. While the Memorial Day service honors only deceased veterans, the Veteran’s Day event honors all veterans, living and dead.
“We try to get the Boy Scouts and the local JROTC programs involved,” Webb said. “We definitely want our young people to realize what our veterans have gone through.”
Keynote speaker for Monday’s service is Air Force Capt. Ronald L. Smith. Webb said he knew little about Smith except for the fact that he’d flown planes to evacuate soldiers wounded in battle.
Other parts of Monday’s service include a parade of colors by members of the Civil Air Patrol, the national anthem sung by by Martha Corriher of American Legion Post 146 and a volley of fire by members of the Rowan County Veterans Honor Detail.
