CONCORD ó Fire and law enforcement officials say they don’t know why an ultralight airplane crashed Tuesday morning, sending its pilot to the hospital.
The one-seater plane crashed into a fence outside a home at 2775 Walter Drive, causing some property damage to the fence, according to Norman Franklin, public information officer for the Concord Fire and Life Safety Department.
Franklin said the male pilot, whose name was not available, sustained minor injuries and was taken to Carolinas Medical Center-NorthEast in Concord, where he remained late Tuesday. His condition was not available.
Franklin could not provide the pilot’s name but said he believed the man did not live in the area.
The plane took off from a private airstrip off Poplar Tent Road. Authorities didn’t know where the man was headed and for what purpose.
The Federal Aviation Administration responded to investigate the crash.
According to the FAA Web site, the plane ó a Kolb Firestar II model ó has no registration listed. The plane was in the process of being sold. The registered owner’s address is listed as Madison, Ind. According to an FAA spokeswoman, the plane is an experimental aircraft.
The Fire Department and the Concord Police Department are investigating.
