KANNAPOLIS ó Kannapolis Police have caught a Charlotte man who led authorities on a chase on Interstate 85 while still handcuffed.
At 10:25 Friday morning, officers were responding to a shoplifting and fight in progress at the Super Target at 6150 Bayfield Parkway, Kannapolis.
The man, later identified as Ricky Allen Giles, 33, last known address 3130 Sharon Amity Road, was fighting with a loss prevention officer, said Kannapolis Police Chief Woody Chavis.
During the arrest, a handcuffed Giles fled on foot and was able to get into a vehicle he was using.
Chavis confirmed the car had been stolen from Charlotte.
The suspect twice rammed a marked Kannapolis police vehicle, disabling it. The officer was responding to the call for assistance from the first officer. An officer who was in the car was not injured.
“He rammed the car and backed up and rammed the car again,” Chavis said.
No official estimation has been confirmed, but Chavis suspects the damage of the patrol vehicle to be around $3,000.
The suspect then fled the area and another Kannapolis Police officer responding to the scene initiated a vehicle pursuit south on I-85. This pursuit ended in Charlotte on I-77 when the suspect wrecked and was taken into custody by the North Carolina Highway Patrol.
“He lost control and ran into a retaining wall at I-77 and Brookshire Freeway,” Chavis said.
Concord Police and troopers with the N.C. Highway Patrol were also involved in the chase.
Chavis said the Highway Patrol took over the chase once it reached Mecklenburg County.
Giles was taken to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte where he was being treated for injuries sustained in the crash.
Hospital officials said late Friday night Giles is in fair condition.
Charges are pending.
